How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?
A good rule of thumb: cleanse any crystal when you first receive it, after an intense healing session, when it feels 'heavy' or dull, and with each new moon cycle. Trust your intuition — if a stone feels off, it's asking to be cleared.
The Best Crystal Cleansing Methods
1. Smoke Cleansing (Smudging)
Pass your crystal through the smoke of sacred herbs or resins — white sage, palo santo, rosemary, or frankincense all work beautifully. Hold the crystal in the smoke for 30–60 seconds, setting the intention to release all that no longer serves. This is one of the most immediate and powerful methods.

2. Moonlight
Place your crystals on a windowsill or outdoors under the full moon overnight. The moon's reflected light gently neutralises stored energy and recharges the stone. Full moon is most potent, but any moonlight phase works. This method is safe for all crystals.
3. Sound Healing
Sound is one of the most underrated cleansing tools. A singing bowl, tingsha bells, or even a tuning fork creates vibration that breaks up stagnant energy throughout a crystal's structure. You don't need to place the crystal inside the bowl — simply strike the bowl and let the sound wash over your stones.
4. Running Water
Hold your crystal under cool running water for 30–60 seconds, visualising the water washing away all accumulated energy. Important: only use this for hard, non-porous stones (quartz, obsidian, amethyst). Avoid water for selenite, malachite, pyrite, kyanite, celestite, and any crystal ending in '-ite' — many will dissolve, rust, or crack.
5. Earth Burial
Return your crystal to the earth. Bury it in your garden or in a pot of soil for 24 hours to a few days. This is particularly powerful for grounding stones like black tourmaline, smoky quartz, and hematite, reconnecting them to their elemental origin.
6. Selenite or Clear Quartz Charging Plates

7. Sunlight
A few hours in morning sunlight will cleanse and charge simultaneously — but use with caution. Many crystals fade irreversibly in UV light: amethyst, rose quartz, celestite, fluorite, and aquamarine should stay out of direct sun. Safer in sunlight: clear quartz, black tourmaline, tiger's eye, and citrine.
